Danish tanker Torm Gertrud was attacked by pirates on Sep 9 at 1935 UTC in position 06 09.03N 002 53.36E, 34nm SW of Lagos, Nigeria, see the map. Pirates armed with guns chased and fired upon a tanker underway for about 20 minutes, but failed to board the tanker due to the evasive manoeuvres and water cannons. Reportedly there were armed guards on board, but the extent of their involvement is not clear. What’s alarming is the fact, that the tanker was proceeding from Lome Benin to Lagos Nigeria in ballast, while as a rule, pirates try to hijacked tankers loaded with oil products for stealing costly cargo. The 19 crew consists of 1 Danish (Captain), 13 Filipino and 1 Croatian. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. Chemical tanker Torm Gertrud IMO 9240885, dwt 46350, built 2002, flag Denmark, manager/owner TORM A/S.
