Greek tanker Energy Centurion with Russian crew hijacked by pirates in Gulf of Guinea

Greek tanker Energy Centurion hijacked by pirates in Gulf of Guinea on August 28 2012 in the vicinity of 05-52N 001-24E, last known position at 08:30 UTC Aug 28 05-50N 001-44E, tanker loaded with 50,000 tons of gasoil was en route to Lome, Togo. There was a a fire exchange with a patrol boat, but luckily, 24 crew, all Russians, was unharmed. Most probably pirates hijack the vessel for stealing part of her cargo, and tanker will be released in several days. A week ago in the same area pirates hijacked UK tanker Anuket Emerald with Russian-Filipino crew, see below the details.

British tanker Anuket Emerald was hijacked by pirates and released 5 days later
Friday, August 24, 2012
British tanker Anuket Emerald was hijacked by pirates and released 5 days later, presumably part of vessel’s cargo was stolen. Hijacks of the tankers for the purpose of stealing some of their cargo, mostly refined oil products, became rather routine in Gulf of Guinea. Unlike Gulf of Aden, owners in many cases, can’t provide their vessels with armed guards. Actually, Gulf of Guinea is much more dangerous than Gulf of Aden when speaking about piracy, and unlike Gulf of Aden, there is no simple solution of the security problem.
