Turkish freighter finally sank


A few hours later, on Sep 1, 2010, at 12.51 p.m. (5:51 a.m. ET), the "Medy" sank off Constanca after failed efforts by Romanian ships to keep it afloat.

Freighter Medy left Constanza Romania, Black sea, bound for Istambul with 3247 tonns of scrap on board, on the night September 1. At 0310 LT vessel issued distress call and asked for immediate assistance, being in danger of sinking. For unknown reason, there was water ingress, vessel heavily sited. Romania salvage body evacuated 17 crew, no injures. Salvage under way, vessel drifting 6 miles off Constanza with 20-25 deg list. No spill reported. Medy IMO 7711660, dwt 4100, built 1982, flag Turkey.
